WXYZ is a licensed commercial AM radio station that operates out of Detroit, Michigan. Under the ownership of George W. Trendle, it developed a number of popular radio programs using local talent, with many of the actors filling multiple roles across the various programs. This stock company of actors eventually became known as the Jewell Players, after the station's then dramatic director James Jewell. Some of the station's programs including The Green Hornet, The Lone Ranger, and Challenge of the Yukon became nationwide hits and spawned television and/or film adaptations. The station's slogan was "The last word in radio," derived from its call letters. During this period, the station had its offices in Detroit's historic Maccabees Building. Today, the station broadcasts a sports news format and is known as WXYT.
