In 1936, a group of children visit the Chicago City Police Stables to sit on the horses and to hear stories of The Masked Man and the Indian, told to them by a man known to the kids as "Uncle John". Also visiting that day is Dan Reid, Jr., who has come to speak with John, his actual uncle, about the world's need again for a living sybol and a lone ranger.

Over a year later, Britt Reid has taken over The Daily Sentinel and is lamenting to Kato about the corruption in the world since his father's passing. Kato suggests there is a way to fight back, at which point, John Reid emerges from the shadows inside the office to pass on the message from Britt's father: Dan Reid's Texas Ranger vest that was the source for the Lone Ranger's mask, with just enough leather left for one more mask.

In 1894, Dan Reid, Jr. visits the grave of his father to discuss with John the fact that Butch Cavendish busted out of prison. Cavendish appears and shoots Dan, with John pursuing him. In the subsequent fight, Cavendish is killed. John treats Dan's wound, and together they bury Cavendish.

In 1938, Eliot Ness arrives at The Daily Sentinel to discuss with Britt Reid that the Torso murders have spread to Chicago, as well as the rise of the Bund. Ness is also there to recruit John's help in dealing with an old enemy, stating that both Reids are needed as symbols again.

A few months later, the two Reids meet Ness at The Chicago Coliseum where a Bund rally is being held. There, they see first-hand the violence the group incites. As they join the fight, Britt asks if the vest comes in green....
