Michael Aloysious Axford is a character who made his first appearance in the franchise with the inaugural episode of the radio series, making him one of the oldest characters in the franchise. Unlike the other characters in the radio series, he had originated in an earlier radio series, Warner Lester, Manhunter and had also appeared in that show's spinoff series, Manhunters. When the previous franchise came to an end, writer Fran Striker and producer George W. Trendle decided to transition Axford, who had been the franchise's breakout character, over to a new show they were working on, The Green Hornet.

Axord was originally played by actor Jim Irwin, who portrayed him until his death in 1938. The role was then taken over by Gil Shea.
