Lenore Case was a recurring character who appeared in the Green Hornet radio series, where she was the secretary of newspaper publisher Britt Reid at the Daily Sentinel newspaper. Lenore was one of the series primary supporting characters and appeared in most episodes. She was played throughout the entire series by Leonore Jewell Allman.
Role in the radio series[]
In the early seasons of the series, where the Hornet was believed to be a criminal mastermind and was wanted by the authorities, Lenore Case was notable for being one of the few individuals who believed the Hornet to be innocent. This placed her in sharp contrast to her coworker, reporter Mike Axford, who shared an office with Lenore and repeatedly vowed to bring the Hornet to justice. As the series progressed, Lenore became one of a handful of individuals to eventually learn of Britt's dual identity as the masked vigilante the Green Hornet. She also began to take on more reporting assignments in these latter seasons, whereas such assignments had been more sporadic in the earlier seasons. Lenore had an aunt, Emma Lovejoy, who occasionally filled in for her as Reid's secretary while she was on vacation, or otherwise taking a leave of absence. She also had two unnamed brothers who were in the armed forces during World War II.[1]
In stark contrast to later iterations of the franchise, where Lenore and Britt became romantically involved, the radio series avoided any hint of this, due to co-creator George W. Trendle's strident belief that such a relationship between them would be completely inappropriate. Instead, the former secretary of Britt's father, Linda, who later became a Daily Sentinel reporter herself, served as Britt's love interest. As part of their strictly professional relationship, Britt always referred to Lenore as "Miss Case," while Mike Axford referred to her as "Casey." While physical descriptions of the characters in the radio series were comparatively rare, it was stated that Lenore was blonde, [2] although Allman was a brunette in real life And remained such in promotional photos depicting her in character as Lenore.
