Kato is a character who appeared in the Green Hornet radio series, which initially aired from 1936-1953, and was the first iteration of the Green Hornet franchise. He is a gifted a scientist and mechanic, as well as a formidable jiu-jitsu expert. In his civilian life, he is the personal valet to millionaire newspaper publisher Britt Reid. However, the pair also work together as masked vigilantes who pose as criminals in order to destroy the New York criminal underworld from within. Kato was originally portrayed in the series by Raymond Muramoto, credited under the stage name "Raymond Toyo." Muramoto was succeeded in the role by Rollon Parker, Mickey Tolan, James Fletcher, and Paul Carnegie respectively. This iteration of Kato also appears in a trio of Big Little Books which were written by the franchise and radio series' co-creator, Fran Striker and set with the same continuity as the radio series.
